Sifu Weekend Schedule

We are excited to celebrate the 45th Anniversary of the Temple and 55th Anniversary of Wah Lum USA!

DATE: OCTOBER 11, SAT

LOCATION: LEGACY MIDDLE SCHOOL GYM: 11398 Lake Underhill Rd, Orlando, FL 32825

Partial proceeds from the event will benefit Alzheimer’s Association.

Registration is due by September 1, 2025. Competitors must pay $85.00 for their first event, and and an additional $15.00 for each extra event. Registrations submitted after September 1, 2025 will be subject to a $20.00 late fee for their first event, as well as a $10.00 late fee for each additional event. Registration will close after September 20, 2025.

General Rules

  • No full-length tournament forms may be posted online. Short clips (15 seconds) or highlight reels are permitted and encouraged.
  • Wah Lum uniforms must be worn during competition.
    • Competitors without proper attire may be disqualified or barred from competing.
    • KUNG FU: Competitors must wear WAH LUM UNIFORMS (no tank tops except sparring), Or a traditional performance uniform.
    • TAI CHI: Competitors must wear Wah Lum Tai Chi shirt, the Jin Mo Tai Chi top, or the white performance uniforms.
  • All competitors and spectators must display proper sportsmanship and respect for one another. This is a Wah Lum family tournament.
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct or language by any competitor, parent, spectator, or instructor, will result in disqualification of the competitor and removal from the event with NO REFUND.
  • Competitors must be present at their ring when their divisions are about to begin. If they have a conflict due to an event scheduled in another ring, notify the Chief Judge. We will do everything possible to schedule so that competitors have a chance to compete in all events.
  • NO REFUNDS will be given once a competitor is registered.
  • Tournament may combine or schedule divisions based on the number of competitors. This may result in various ages, levels, or coed competition.
  • Placement of competitor in the correct category is at the discretion of the Temple.
  • Competitors do NOT need tickets to enter the tournament. Registration also includes 1 pizza ticket unless they choose to opt out.

SCORING

Hand and weapon forms will be scored on presentation, self-expression, balance, speed (for kung fu), power, transition between moves, proper execution of technique, and focus. The divisions will receive scores in the following ranges:

PERFORMANCE PROCEDURES

  • The first to register is the last to go.
  • Bow before entering the competition area, walk to starting location of the competition area, bow to judges (facing the head judge’s table), wait for the head judge to indicate that they are ready, then begin the form.
  • After completing performance, face the head judge’s table to be scored, bow to all the judges, and then walk out of the competition area.
  • If there are 6 or more competitors:
    • The first three competitors will perform and be seated without receiving their scores.  After the third competitor, the judges will meet to establish a baseline average according to the first three performances.
    • Then each of the first three competitors will receive their score in order of performance.
    • After this, each competitor will be scored immediately after performing.
  • If there are 5 people or less in the division, competitors will perform and be scored immediately after performance.
  • If you are not present when your name is called, two additional name calls will be made over the PA system. If you do not respond, you will forfeit the event. The forfeiture is final and cannot be reversed.
  • 1st – 4th places will be awarded immediately after the event.

KUNG FU

Forms:

Empty-hand form competition divisions are categorized according to age and the competitor’s current level of training and the last test taken. For example, if a student is learning Say Lok, then that student competes in the 9B level.  Students who are uncertain of their competition level should consult their Sifu.

Competitors may only choose from the forms listed in the registration form.

Note: For 10B level, competitors may perform the specified number (three for adults; two for children, 1 peewee) of the four basic Wah Lum exercises (Baat Choy, Cum Na Sow, Pok Ma, Pow Choy).  If the competitor knows 16 hands then he/she must perform 16 hands.

For 9A Level, competitors may perform 10 Mantis Hands followed by 7 kicks as one form.

  • Only standard curriculum forms can be performed. Forms cannot be changed from their original state. (No adding: butterfly kicks, splits, kip-ups, etc.).
  • Judges acknowledge there are some forms which vary in moves and ending (ex. double broadswords).
  • If there is a conflict then the judges will call a meeting and one of the arbitrators will make a decision.
  • Going out of the ring:
    • No point deduction for going out of the ring, unless competitors show a lack of awareness for spacing needed. Competitor must notify judges if any additional space is needed prior to their performance.
  • Landing on the mark:
    • Competitors should land close to their starting position.
  • If a competitor must restart their form, only the HEAD JUDGE will deduct from the final score:
    • 12 and UNDER: .5 deduction from the total score
    • 13 and OLDER: 1 deduction from the total score
  • Note: if competitor restarts more than 2 times the same point deduction will be taken off of the final, but for individual scores judges will use their discretion.

Weapons:

Weapons competition levels are categorized according to age and the number of years the competitor has trained in the Wah Lum system. The breakdown of levels is as follows:

Intermediate 3 – 5 years
Advanced A & B Over 5 years, Over 10 years

Competitors may choose from the weapons listed in the registration form.  Weapons divisions are categorized by long and short weapon.

Qualified Forms for the following weapons:

Fan: Fighting or Plum Flower

Gim: WL curriculum gim only

Double Broadswords: Tornado Broadswords only

Spear: Lo Gar or Six Corner

Stick: Right hand, 16 Styles, Basic, or Plum flower

Double Butterfly: 13 chop or Mok Gar (curriculum)

Tiger Fork:  Mok Gar or Yu Gar (seminar)

Double Daggers: WL curriculum form only

  • Weapons will be checked for safety.
  • Students can not stab or hit the flooring at the gymnasium
  • If a competitor drops their weapon on the floor or stabs the floor:
    • 12 and UNDER: .5 deduction from the total score will be deducted
    • 13 and OLDER: 1 point deduction from the total score will be deducted
  • If their weapon breaks, the competitor may restart the form.
    • If a competitor must restart their form, only the HEAD JUDGE will deduct from the final score:
    • 12 and UNDER: .5 deduction from the total score
    • 13 and OLDER: 1 deduction from the total score
    • Note: if competitor restarts more than 2 times the same point deduction will be taken off of the final, but for individual scores judges will use their discretion.

TAI CHI

Tai Chi competition divisions are categorized according to the number of years the competitor has been taking Tai Chi in the Wah Lum system.  The Tai Chi competition categories and corresponding competition forms are as follows:

**Part 1 and Part 2 are taken from 108 Movements Tai Chi Form.  Part 2 should stop after: the three kicks, downward block, punch, and then close.

  1. Time limits:
    Part 2 Modified: Maximum 3 minutes
    Tai Chi Weapons: Maximum 4 minutes
  2. We recognize there are some variances of the form and encourage judges to score based on: Fluidity/flow, stances, posture,  martial intent, balance, focus, and technique.
  3. Competitor must finish the section of the form they are competing in or points will be deducted.

Deductions

    • .5 deduction for overtime
    • .5 deduction for not finishing the form or ending with your back to the judges.
    • If a competitor must restart their form, only the HEAD JUDGE will deduct 1 point deduction from the total score
    • Note: if competitor restarts more than 2 times the same point deduction will be taken off of the final, but for individual scores judges will use their discretion.

Two-person Fight Sets

  1. Fight set divisions are categorized into empty-hand and weapons.  No further breakdown (such as number of years in training) is applied.
  2. All two-person forms must be kept in their traditional state.  Points will be deducted for any changed or added moves (for example, butterfly kicks, splits, kip-ups, etc.).
  3. The two-person fight set divisions will receive scores in the range of 7-9.
  4. For weapon sets, the following will be allowed: stick vs stick or stick vs broadsword

 

 

Free Sparring Rules

(Continuous Light Contact Sparring)

  • Matches:
  • All matches will be based on a series of controlled techniques and counter attacks.
  • All matches are single elimination. Lose and you are eliminated. Win and you advance to the next bracket.
  • Each match will consist of three 1-minute Rounds unless the head judge calls for time out (injuries, equipment adjustment etc.).
  • Winner of first two Rounds wins the Match.
  • In case of a tie, there will be a 30-second sudden-death to determine the winner.
  • The contestants will wear a red or white flag during their match.

 

  • Judges:
  • Advanced divisions: Three corner judges and a head judge (referee).
  • All other divisions: Minimum of two corner judges and a head judge. There will be one timekeeper for each ring.

 

  • Scoring:
  • A match will consist of a series of encounters, which the head judge will stop periodically to maintain control of the match.
  • Each corner judge will keep score on the opponents throughout the match.
  • At the end of the match the corner judges will vote red or white to determine the winner of the match by majority.
  • If the scores are tied at the end of the match, a thirty-second sudden death match will be granted. The winner will be determined by a majority vote of the judges and the head judge.
  • Legal Techniques:
  • All closed hand strikes and kicks used with control to legal targets.
  • Light contact to the headgear with closed hand strikes and kicks.

(Advanced & Intermediate Divisions Only can make head contact: ALL COMPETITORS IN ADV/INT MUST HAVE FACE MASK OR CAGE)

  • Legal Contact Targets:
  • Head: (adult advanced/intermediate and 16-17 youth advanced/intermediate).

Beginner adult and all youth divisions, body targets only.

  • Chest
  • Abdomen
  • Front and Side of torso
  • Outside of the thigh (above the knee and below the hip)
  • Sweep to the outer side front leg only (below the knee)

NOTE: The above targets require good control since any excessive contact to these areas will result in immediate disqualification.

  • Competitors will be disqualified for:
  • Not obeying the rules of the officials.
  • Verbal abuse and unsportsmanlike conduct from the participants or coaches.
  • Using illegal techniques deliberately or by accident that would be harmful to the opponent.
  • Excessive contact to the face (facemask), head or body (to be determined by the head judge).
  • Causing any bleeding or swelling to the opponent’s face or head.
  • Receiving three warnings for running out of the ring.
  • Using illegal techniques such as: choking, elbows, knees, finger strikes, head butting, sweeps or takedowns.
  • One warning may be given for using an illegal technique or hitting an illegal target (to be determined by the head judge). Next infraction would be immediate disqualification.

 

  • Illegal Targets:
  • Headgear (for beginners and youth)
  • Sides and back of the neck and the throat
  • Spine and back of ribs
  • Groin
  • All joints
  • Mandatory Protective Equipment:
  • Headgear (face mask mandatory for ADV/INT)
  • Mouth piece (all participants)
  • Groin cup (mandatory for male participants)
  • Foot pads must cover the entire foot: ankle and toes (no shoes)
  • Gloves (foam or vinyl/leather)
  • Chest protectors optional
  • Shin guards are optional

 

These are Free Sparring Rules and will be strictly enforced by all officials.

 

NOTE: By definition, light contact sparring implies that strikes and kicks are of a tagging nature and NOT of a jarring nature executed with heavy impact force!
