ABOUT WAH LUM INSTRUCTORS
Did you know? Wah Lum® Sifus are tested every 3 years to maintain the quality of the system of each schools. Many of these Sifus have opened schools around the world. All Sifus certify at the Wah Lum Temple under the direction of Grandmaster Chan, Sifu Mimi Chan, and a panel of senior Sifus.
It is considered disrespectful to teach Wah Lum® without the approval from the Wah Lum® Headquarters.
At the Wah Lum Temple, the selection process for assistant instructors is rigorous. We are proud and grateful to have an amazing team of assistants who are all volunteers!
Why do we call our teachers Sifu, Si-Hing, or Si-Jye before our instructors name?
This is a traditional Chinese martial arts school. In the Chinese culture, familial titles are used show respect to our elders.
This is a long-standing part of our martial arts culture and a way we show mutual respect within the training family.
Much like how we bow to the altar at the end of each class, using these titles is a small but meaningful way to honor the tradition and the people helping you grow.
What is a Sifu?
Sifu means teacher. At the Temple anyone who has earned the title of Sifu indicates a student who has taken the Sifu level test.
What is a Si-Hing or Si-Jye?
Si-Hing means older martial arts brother. Si-Jye means older martial arts sister. At the Temple we utilize these terms to indicate your assistant instructors who have been selected and qualified by Sifu Mimi Chan to teach.
What does ‘generation’ mean?
Grandmaster Chan is the 6th generation successor of the Wah Lum System. Sifu Mimi Chan is the 7th generation successor. There are also kung fu brothers in her generation that have dedicated their life to proliferating the art of Wah Lum. All kung fu students fall under the direction of Sifu Mimi at the Temple, so every student here are considered 8th generation. Fun Fact: There are 8th and 9th generation Sifus in Wah Lum!
